In common with other languages, English has its own rhythm and musicality and, to sound ‘English’ it is necessary to acquire this musicality. I have found the use of Nursery Rhymes very effective when teaching English to young children. The repetition of the rhyming text together movement and dancing games is an effective and fun way to acquire the musicality and learn new vocabulary. Rhymes such as ‘Ring a Ring of Roses ‘ and Oranges and Lemons’ are favourites in this category. Where movement is not applicable, for example in the Nursery Rhymes of ‘Incy Wincy Spider’ and ‘Five Green Speckled Frogs’ I like to make working models which the children can operate whilst reciting the rhyme. ‘Hands on Learning’ is the most effective method for both Children AND adults. Making models, painting or drawing reinforces the learning process and leaves a strong imprint in the memory. It also removes inhibitions and shyness and soon everyone is happily conversing.
This simple model joins many more outside my house to encourage Local children to use the many resources in libraries and on the internet to help them improve their spoken English.
