Yesterday. Talking about the past. Passato Prossimo

Yesterday was a beautiful day.

In the morning I visited Preggio.

Preggio is fifteen minutes from Castel Rigone by car.

I parked (left) my car in the centre and walked around the town. The streets were narrow and shaded.

It was cold so I left the town and walked into the countryside.

A very large dog ran towards me.

He became my friend for the morning.

The countryside was very beautiful.

The view was incredible.

It was possible to see for miles and miles.

The roads were covered (carpeted) with leaves and fir-cones.

I collected some fir cones for my garden.

I walked for many kilometres and then returned to the town.

The walk was very good for my heart and legs because there were many hills to climb.

I said goodbye to my friend, the dog and got into my car.

I like Preggio very much and will return in a few weeks for the Chestnut Festival.

Ieri il tempo era molto bello. Stamattina sono andato visitare a Preggio. Preggio è quindici minute da Castel Rigone in auto.

Ho lasciato la mia macchina al centro e ho passeggiato un po’ per la città.

Le strade erano strette e ombrose.

Erano freddi sono uscita dalla città a piedi e nella campagna dove il sole splendeva.

Una cane grande verso di me. Era il mio amico per la mattina.

La campagna era bellissima. La vista era incredibile .

Si poteva vedere per chilometri.

Gli alberi erano molto colorato.

La strada era coperta di foglie e pigne.

Ho raccolto alcune pigne per il mio giardino.

Ho camminato per molti chilometri e poi tornata in città.

La passeggiata era buona per il mio,cuore e le gambe perché c’erano molte colline da salire.

Ho detto arrivederci la mia amica, al cane, e sono entrato a nella mia macchina.

Mi piace Preggio molto e ritornerò in poche settimane per la Sagra delle Castagne

Getting children to TALK!

Learning a language should first be about communicating. About conversation. About having the confidence to TALK.

Grammar will fall in place naturally and later.

To talk one needs vocabulary and this comes through a combination of role-play, games and sharing books and making up little stories AND daily use and practice.

When I’m teaching young children I concentrate on conversation. Getting them to TALK. We play games and use role-play. Recite Rhymes. Play dancing games. Make up funny stories and, of course, my ‘Jumbles’ toys are a great incentive for the very young.

But if the children go home and don’t use the newly learnt vocabulary it will all be lost by the next lesson. This is where language videos come in. Just ten minutes a day watching a video and practicing the vocabulary is far more effective than worksheets or exercises from books. The Videos I post on my channel are ones I make for my own pupils but they are there for everyone to use.

This new series (Roo and Sara)is aimed at children from six years. It’s one I’m currently using myself and so will be added to every few days. The first lesson introduces the characters.

This first lesson of ROO and SARA introduces the characters.

The text is for the adult because I recommend that an adult always watches the programmes with the child. This enables overlearning and practice during the next few days. It also tells the child that you are interested in them and what they are learning.

Blow painting

This lesson was such fun AND the kids not only learnt new vocabulary and verbs they USED them too.

I demonstrated the verbs …to drip/ to blow/ to spread.

Then the children made their first painting ..a face.

We talked about the new colours we had made and the ‘spikey’ hair.

Then, in pairs, the children instructed each other to make a second picture. Here is one.

Fun with Nursery Rhymesj

Language is musical.

Every language has a unique pattern and rhythm.

Reciting Nursery Rhymes helps you learn that pattern. It also helps pronounciation. This Spring I have mounted a special Nursery Rhyme Display outside my house (Jumble House) in Castel Rigone, Umbria to encourage local children to enjoy having fun learning and using English.
